Restoring a 1950s Fish Lake Cabin: A Maple Grove Exterior Painting Case Study

Restoring a 1950s Fish Lake Cabin: A Maple Grove Exterior Painting Case Study

In Maple Grove, Minnesota, right on the shores of Fish Lake, we encountered an outdated 1950s property that was causing the homeowner serious anxiety; they needed to list their home for the competitive spring real estate market, but the weathered, natural-stained exterior lacked the curb appeal needed to attract modern buyers.

The Challenge

The roughly 3,000-square-foot home, complete with a detached garage, was originally built as a cabin and was stuck with a dated "cottage feel". To make matters worse, the property had sustained physical damage over the years, including prominent woodpecker holes across the siding. The homeowner wanted to transition away from the rustic cabin aesthetic into a welcoming, modern "home feel" with a lakeside theme to wow prospective buyers.

The Expert Diagnosis

During our initial consultation, we provided a detailed quote and expert advice on both the color palette and the proper technical process. The home's exterior featured cedar shakes. Cedar is an incredibly porous wood that easily retains moisture. We advised the homeowner that using standard latex house paint would trap that moisture, causing the coating to refuse and ultimately creating a synthetic, "plasticky" look. To preserve the natural texture of the wood while achieving the new color, we diagnosed that a specialized solid body stain was the only correct path forward.

The Execution

Because the homeowner was rushing to hit the early spring real estate market, our biggest adversary was mother nature; stain requires an overnight temperature of at least 45 degrees. We deployed a larger crew to move exceptionally fast during the open windows of good weather.

Before any stain was applied, our in-house handyman replaced compromised siding, while our painting crew meticulously patched, filled, spot-primed, and sanded the woodpecker holes. We power-washed the entire house and carefully protected all landscaping and non-paintable surfaces with painter's plastic, tarps, tape, and paper.

For the design, we curated a nautical lakeside theme. We applied a gorgeous Benjamin Moore Hail Navy solid body stain to the cedar shakes, complemented by a crisp Sherwin Williams Alabaster (a bone white) for the trim package and the front door. To maximize curb appeal, we also power-washed and sprayed the detached garage, garage doors, and fascia right in place.

The Result

The entire transformation of the home and detached garage took just four days to complete, and the homeowner didn't even need to be present while we worked. When they returned, they were met with a stunning "wow factor".

The outdated 1940s/50s cabin had been completely transformed into a gorgeous, modern property resembling a seaside Nantucket home. The curb appeal was so dramatically enhanced that the homeowner expressed deep remorse about waiting so long to get the work done, wishing they had completed it years ago so they could have enjoyed it themselves.

Case Study FAQs: Residential Exterior Renovations

  • Should I paint or stain cedar shake siding in Minnesota? You should always use a stain, such as a solid body stain, on cedar shake siding rather than standard paint. Cedar is highly porous; painting it can trap moisture, causing the paint to refuse and peel, whereas stain allows the wood to breathe while protecting it.

  • How can exterior painting increase curb appeal before selling a house? A fresh exterior coat drastically modernizes a home's look, making it instantly attractive to home buyers. Updating trim packages and painting detached garages and garage doors provides massive visual impact for a very reasonable cost.

  • How do painters fix woodpecker holes before painting? Before applying any stain or paint, professional painters will patch, fill, spot prime, and sand any woodpecker holes. If the damage is too severe, an in-house handyman can replace the compromised siding entirely to ensure a flawless final finish.
