Recent Project StorageMart Exterior Repaint in Plymouth, MN A storage building's color is part of its signage. When the paint on StorageMart's Plymouth facility no longer matched the brand's corporate color scheme, the building was giving drivers the wrong first impression from the highway. StorageMart is one of our regular commercial clients, and we maintain their local facilities. This location sits off Highway 169 at Bass Lake Road in Plymouth, Minnesota, with the main store front facing traffic. The face of that building is an open-face concrete finish — a rough, corrugated surface that drinks up more coating than a smooth wall. The facility stayed open throughout, so our crew worked around customers during business hours. Key Takeaways THE CHALLENGEThe building's existing color had fallen out of StorageMart's corporate scheme, and the rough open-face concrete required more product than a standard wall. THE COATINGWe power washed the surfaces, sprayed Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint in satin with a Graco sprayer and a 517 tip, and coated the air conditioning units with a Sherwin-Williams direct-to-metal primer and paint. THE RESULTA three-day repaint, finished during business hours before the end of the painting season, with the door, downspouts, conduit, and parapet cap all tied into the new color. StorageMart asked us to bid a color change into their corporate color, and once the bid was accepted they gave us the exact color to match. Because the building face is textured concrete and the mechanical equipment is bare metal, the job called for two different coating systems on the same elevation. We measured the wall by wheel for linear square footage and priced it per square foot, with allowance built in for how thirsty an open-face surface can be. Project Summary Client Profile: StorageMart — a self-storage operator whose local facilities we maintain Project Location: Plymouth, Minnesota — off Highway 169 at Bass Lake Road Primary Objective: Bring the main store building back into the brand's corporate color with Commercial Painting Plymouth crews working around open business hours Coating System: Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint in satin sprayed over open-face concrete, plus direct-to-metal primer and paint on the air conditioning units, as part of our Commercial Exterior Painting work Key Outcome: Three-day repaint completed before the end of the season, with signage and the security camera protected throughout Plymouth Storage Facility Paint Assessment The front of the store is an open-face concrete finish — rough, slightly corrugated, with vertical lines running down the wall. That texture holds dust and dirt, and it takes noticeably more product per square foot than a flat block or smooth panel. We measured the wall by wheel and priced it per square foot, then factored in the extra material the texture would pull. The elevation also had a mix of substrates beyond the concrete itself. Two air conditioning units sat on the ground along the side, with a service door, downspouts, electrical conduit, and a parapet cap at the top. Signage, the house numbers, and a security camera all needed protecting rather than painting. Power Washing and Spray Application We started with a power wash so the crew had clean surfaces, then brushed off any remaining dust before coating. The concrete face was sprayed with a Graco sprayer using a 517 tip and was not back-rolled — on a surface that rough, back-rolling does not make sense. The air conditioning units got light sanding and priming first, then a Sherwin-Williams direct-to-metal primer and paint so they would match the body color instead of standing out beside it. "They were very happy to get the building painted before the season was over and get it checked off their list of things to do" - (Jon, Get Fresh Paint) Signs, the camera, and anything else that needed to stay clean were masked and protected before spraying began, and the house numbers went back on as one of the final steps. The work ran during the day with customers coming and going, which is normal for the Commercial Painting Company side of our business and something we plan around rather than fight. You can see similar facility work in our Commercial Painting Gallery. Corporate Colors Facing Highway 169 The whole job took three days, start to finish, with little in the way of complications. The door, downspouts, conduit, and parapet cap all read as one unit with the wall now, and the air conditioning units look fresh instead of dated next to new paint. The building faces the highway, so thousands of drivers see the result every day. StorageMart was glad to have it crossed off before the painting season closed, and we returned later to handle the garage side and a relocated sign that needed painting. Need Your Facility Repainted? The StorageMart repaint was performed during the day with the store open, so the crew planned each stage around customer traffic. Signs, the security camera, and anything else that needed to stay clean were masked and protected before spraying started. Do you paint rooftop and ground-level HVAC units? We do, and on commercial sites it is often requested so the equipment matches the brand color. On this project the ground-level air conditioning units were lightly sanded and primed, then finished with a Sherwin-Williams direct-to-metal primer and paint built for bare steel. Our commercial work is backed by our Painting Warranty.
